Reporting Line        : Manager: Knowledge Management
Overall Job Purpose   Responsible for collections management at the CGS Museum.

 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Supervision and overseeing of the Geoscience Museum Collections, including the education programme, displays and exhibitions.
  • Database management: Cataloguing and accessioning of collections.
  • Conservation of Archaeological, Palaeontological specimens, objects and materials.
  • General administrative duties, including budgeting and supervision of subordinates.
  • Co-ordination of CGS Museum activities, with the CG Museum Curator.
  • Participate in the marketing of the Geoscience Museum Research, both nationally and internationally, at the public and governmental levels.
  • Provide expert scientific, technical and research input and support to visiting scholars, researchers and academics.
  • Implement CGS Policies and International Conservation Policies to mitigate risks
  • Assist CGS Curator with marketing, publicity, educational programmes and tours.
  • Provide input to the curation of the CGS Museum collection and to enhance the collection.
  • Research and document collected and/ retrieved specimens, manage storage, and display.
  • Conceptualisation, planning and execution of the Museum exhibitions.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Grade 12; and
  • National Diploma (NQF Level 6)  in Museum Management plus 5 years relevant experience,or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in Palaeontology, Archaeology, Museum Studies or equivalent plus 3 years relevant experience in a museum environment.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • Relevant experience in the study and research of Mineralogical and Palaeontological Collections.
  • Knowledge of Museum Operations, and Administration.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Office Suite.
