Overall, Job Purpose : Undertake limited research in a wide variety of geoscientific fields to provide understanding of geological history, structure, and resources for various applications, including mineral exploration, resource management, infrastructure development and understanding natural hazards, including project implementation under the guidance of more senior scientific staff.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct limited geoscience research under guidance, focused on South Africa’s mapping programme.
- Conduct geological surveys and mapping under guidance or supervision, which include collecting geological data and conducting analyses and interpretation.
- Write scientific reports under guidance.
- Undertake map compilation and geoscience data collation under instruction and guidance.
- Give formal scientific or technical presentations of papers or reports, internally, to other staff members and externally with guidance at conferences or symposia (typically once a year).
- Publish research findings internally and externally based on the nature of the project cycle.
- Work within the requirements of the prescribed work standards (i.e., ISO and international best practices).
- Resolve simple problems in a variety of geoscientific fields in line (in part) with SOP/research methodology under guidance or supervision.
- Participate in statutory and/or commercial projects under supervision
- Undertake specific and requisite self-improvement learning/conferences and development through workshops/training courses.
- Maintaining field equipment.
KEY PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES AND REQUIRED SKILLS
- Ability to conduct geo-scientific investigations and research with minimal supervision.
- Ability to present geo-scientific investigations in a written report.
- Ability to present scientific papers to members of staff or externally.
- Ability to relate to members of a team and work within a team setting.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade 12; and
- BSc Hons in Geology, or any other relevant earth science qualification.
- Candidate Natural Scientist (Cand.Sci.Nat.) registration with SACNASP will be advantageous.
- Valid driver’s licence
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Basic knowledge of geological mapping, sample collection, and interpretation of geological features will be an added advantage.
- Familiarity with using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for data analysis and visualisation will be an added advantage.
